Chronic boredom to joy at work (a mini-series)
I’ve spent years researching boredom at work - after falling into a boredom coma in my first career and slowly, painfully climbing out of it.
When we ignore boredom for long enough it becomes very stressful, debilitating and ultimately it crushes our potential for joy.
Here’s my personal story and the three strategies that underpin the design of work that feels more stimulating, more meaningful and more fun.
How most of us deal with boredom at work
The results from my biggest piece of research in a decade (Midlife Work-life Satisfaction Study) showed me that boredom at work is a gigantic problem for professionals in their 40s, 50s and 60s.
In busy lives, it might seem prudent to ignore the ‘insignificant’ problem of feeling dulled at work.
Yet ignoring boredom is where often the bigger problems start.
